'Idol' Judge Admits Rehearsal Guided Her

Posted by Jess | April 30, 2008

This is a fairly long article about what happened last night. It pretty much explains what Paula said on Johnjay & Rich if you've listened to the interviews. Of course they're never going to leave her alone. *sigh* I have to agree though, it was a very confusing show.

LOS ANGELES: Paula Abdul acknowledged on Wednesday what some "American Idol" viewers have long suspected: The show's judges sometimes see portions of the dress rehearsal for the show and use that to help formulate their comments on the evening's live performance.

The issue came up on Wednesday as Abdul, one of the three judges on "Idol," the Fox talent competition, tried to explain comments she made during Tuesday evening's live broadcast, in which she offered a critique of a performance that had not yet taken place.

After being informed of her error during the broadcast, Abdul eventually explained that she mixed up her notes and had meant to comment on another contestant. But during a radio interview on Wednesday morning Abdul revealed that she had seen part of the dress rehearsal, which takes place about two hours before the live broadcast, and had mixed up the rehearsal and the live performances.

The issue raises questions about the credibility of the show, which each week is the most-watched program on television, recently attracting about 24 million viewers per episode, a third more than the next most-watched program, "Dancing With the Stars." The judges frequently warn the contestants that they have to inspire and excite the audience each week and that they risk elimination if they let their attention wane. "American Idol" has long promoted that each contestant's fate hangs on the live broadcast, when anything can happen. On Wednesday online chatter about Abdul's mistake included some critics, like Michael Slezak on Entertainment Weekly's ew.com, even raising questions about whether the judges are given scripted comments to recite about the contestants.

Cecile Frot-Coutaz, chief executive of FremantleMedia North America and an executive producer of "American Idol," said Wednesday that the judges are never given scripted comments, and that she does not believe that the credibility of the show has been compromised.

"The judges have always acknowledged they occasionally watch rehearsals, but in the end they only comment on what happens in the live show," she said in a written response to questions about the incident. She added that the judge's opinions do not determine the viewers' votes.

This is not the first time that the issue has been raised. Earlier this season Abdul commented about viewing a rehearsal, telling Michael Johns, a contestant who has now been eliminated, that his version of the Beatles song "A Day in the Life" had been "phenomenal" in rehearsal but less so in live performance.

And in March 2007 an article published in The Independent, a British newspaper, offered a behind-the-scenes look at "American Idol," reporting that the judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson watch the television feeds of the dress rehearsal to "give themselves an idea of what comments they will make when the show goes live."

The strange episode on Tuesday featured performances by the Top 5 finalists. Each singer prepared two songs for Tuesday's show, and early in the broadcast Ryan Seacrest, the host, told the audience that the judges would not offer their regular critiques until after the singers had performed both songs.

But after each singer had performed a first song, Seacrest reversed course, bringing the performers onstage and asking the judges quickly to critique the performance of the first song.

On Wednesday, during his daily radio show on KIIS-FM in Los Angeles, Seacrest said that Nigel Lythgoe, an executive producer of "Idol," informed him of the change as the fifth contestant, Syesha Mercado, was performing her first song, only seconds before he was to query the judges.

When Seacrest asked Abdul for her comments, she offered her critique on Jason Castro's "first song," "Forever in Blue Jeans," then added: "The second song, I felt like your usual charm, it was missing for me. It kind of left me a little empty. And the two songs, it made me feel like you're not fighting hard enough to get into the Top 4."

As Seacrest anxiously glanced offstage for help, Jackson, beside Abdul at the judges' table, gently prompted her to make comments "just on the first one." Confused, Abdul said to Castro, "I thought you sang twice." After realizing what had occurred, she then explained that she got her notes mixed up and had meant her comments to be about the next singer, David Cook. But instead of repeating that she thought Cook had given an uninspired performance, she told him, "You were fantastic."

Attempting on Wednesday to explain her misstep, Abdul spoke on Seacrest's radio show and said she had seen Castro's rehearsal of his second song as she was bringing in a friend to the dress rehearsal audience.

When Lythgoe changed the format, she hurriedly made further notes, she said, mixing up Castro's live performance with the rehearsal that she remembered.

Seacrest, during Tuesday's "Idol" broadcast, was left to remark on what seemed to be Abdul's clairvoyance. "Paula," he said, "you're seeing the future, baby."

Morrow: On 'American Idol,' Abdul Whips Up Nice

Posted by Jess | April 29, 2008

NASHVILLE - For "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul, kindness is a much-needed virtue.

"There's a great strength in being kind," says Abdul, who is sometimes criticized by fans for being too lenient on contestants.

Rarely does she say an unkind word to contestants, even when they're having an off night. Fans are well aware of how fellow judge Simon Cowell teases her - and sometimes openly mocks her - about her judging technique.

"Paula Abdul has always been known as 'the good judge' on 'American Idol'," writes David Bloomberg on the Web site foxesonidol.com.

"She is supposedly there to offset 'Mr. Nasty' himself, Simon Cowell. But throughout the entire competition, it has struck me and many others that she doesn't really offset him.

"Simon, after all, can certainly be blunt in his assessment of any faults the singers might have. But he can be just as effusive in his praise when he feels a contestant deserves it. Paula, on the other hand, always makes positive comments."

Abdul says she's making an important contribution on "Idol" (airing 8 tonight, WTNZ, Channel 43). "Simon is doing his job, and I am doing mine," she says. "I have always known what mine is.

"It's easy for him to be the way he is, and it is easy for me to do what I feel like I need to do. We are who we are."

But the Queen of Nice also makes an aside about her fellow judge: "He can be worse off camera."

She also says her kindness is not deceitful. "I am honest, very honest," she says of her critiques.

Abdul says her approach to contestants comes from her years as a performer.

"My style differs from Randy (Jackson) and from Simon because I am a performer," says Abdul, whose new CD is coming this summer, a partial greatest hits mixed with new material. "I know what it's like to be up there and vulnerable.

"There's a certain psyche to being up there and performing. I don't know if anyone can understand it unless they do it themselves."

Jackson and Cowell are music and television producers.

"A performer's psyche is a different beast to deal with altogether," Abdul says. "When you're offering constructive criticism, there has to be something positive offered. It doesn't matter what you are criticizing.

"If you're given some negativity, it doesn't matter how it may be true, it's not always going to help. You'll be left with only negative thoughts. If you end criticism with ' … but I like you,' the brain doesn't really hear that.

"As someone who has been out there, it's important to put that out there."

Paula Abdul on the Injury That Almost Took Her Life

Posted by Jess | April 26, 2008

She's been knocked down more times than she cares to remember, and now Hollywood's resident comeback kid, Paula Abdul, is sharing her harrowing journey exclusively with "Extra."

"I was born premature," Paula reveals. "Almost three months, just under three pounds with a broken windpipe and my lungs a complete mess."

Paula fought her way from fast food jobs and high school musicals to the famous LA Forum floor, getting her big break as a Lakers girl in 1981.

One superstar singing career later came tragedy, when a 1992 emergency landing almost robbed Paula of her voice. Now, for the first time, Abdul reveals the severity of the injury that forced her from the spotlight.

"My vocal chords were completely injured," she says. "And I barely had audible sounds. It took me two years to get my voice working again."

Now, when though Paula absorbs plenty of punishment from "Idol's" resident grouch, she thanks the show for convincing her to give showbiz one more shot and Simon for challenging her every week.

"He has meant a lot in my life for many reasons," she admits. "He has made me stronger than I ever imagined I could be. There's nobody who can rock my world, nobody, I learned from the master himself."

Paula Abdul: I Want to Dance with the Stars!

Posted by Jess | April 21, 2008

As if being a judge on American Idol isn't enough for singer (and dancer, and choreographer) Paula Abdul, she now tells OK! that there's a possibility she might be crossing to the other side of the table to compete on the next season of Dancing With the Stars!

"I'm just hypothetically thinking about it," Paula revealed to OK! after sitting in on Monday's taping of the hit ABC reality competition. And, despite being on a competing network (Idol airs on Fox), she claims there would be no conflict with her show. "There’s a thing called the 'off-season,' I think."

Last month, DWTS host Tom Bergeron spilled the beans that Paula wanted to do his reality series, too. And now, the "Straight Up" singer can't stop talking about it.

"It's all Tom's fault!" she joked' adding, "I'm a huge fan [of DWTS]. It would be a phenomenal experience for me to be a student and to learn a form of dance that I’ve never been introduced to."

But before all the Paula fans go setting their Tivos for next season, she advises, "I'd be honored, but that does not confirm or deny anything that’s out there right now.

And though Paula first gained notoriety for choreographing dance routines for some of the biggest artists in pop, incredibly, she insists that she's never been a professional dancer. "I was always a choreographer... But I've never been able to be a student and I've never done partnering. If I even dabbled with it, I had to be the guy and that's not fun. I want to wear the pretty dresses like the girls."

Asked what she thinks about this season of DWTS, which has been competing directly with Idol on Tuesday nights, Paula has nothing but good things to say. "It's fantastic. Unbelievable. Out of the ballpark." However, she adds, "Ask me tomorrow night and I'll deny I said one thing!"

The two shows not only share the same Tuesday time slot, their studios are also right next to each other. "What are the odds that two of my favorite shows are so close to each other?" Paula asks. "I can throw my panties at Tom Bergeron!"

As for what her fellow AI judge Simon Cowell would think of her making the move to DWTS, Paula tells OK!, "He'd probably say, 'Let me be a guest and place four cameras on every angle of my facial expressions.'

Paula also took some time to weigh in on her DWTS favorites: "I'm blown away by Kristi Yamaguchi, Jason Taylor - and Marlee Matlin is a friend of mine. I love seeing people defy what other people think."

When pressed to pick a winner for this season, Paula picks ice princess (and OK! blogger) Kristi, "based on consistency and showing her spirit. In our generation, Kristi Yamaguchi as a world class figure skater is about as good as it gets and to see her in a different realm is awesome."

So will we see the "Forever Your Girl" singer hit the dance floor next? "Who knows?" she says. "I'll definitely be forever a fan."
